What is Infertility?

We expect 85% of all couples to achieve a pregnancy within 12 to 18 months of unprotected intercourse. In other words, 15% of couples will remain unsuccessful in their attempts at pregnancy and are thus labeled as infertile couples.

There are numerous causes for infertility. Approximately 40% of infertility is due to female factors and 40% due solely to male factors. Twenty percent of couples will have both female and male problems. By carrying out a thorough work up, the causes for infertility are usually able to be defined within about two menstrual cycles.

The primary female issues involve problems with ovulation and distortion of normal pelvic anatomy.

Male infertility normally revolves around poor quality semen parameters.
