Post-Coital Test
A post-coital test (PK) involves the examination of cervical mucus at mid-cycle. This test is done shortly after intercourse. The quality and amount of the cervical mucus is determined. The presence of sperm, their number, appearance and motility are also evaluated. This examination provides information about both partners. Specifically, it is learned whether or not sperm cells are being produced and ejaculated normally, whether the sperm are arriving at the proper place, and if so, whether they are being received and nourished properly by the cervical secretions.
Instructions
- A post-coital test is ideally done just before the time of expected ovulation. This would be approximately day 13 of a 28 day cycle.
- Arrange to have intercourse approximately 2-3 hours prior to the appointment time. It will also be beneficial to avoid ejaculation for 48 hours prior to the test.
- Do not use lubrication with intercourse, do not douche afterward or use any vaginal medications, unless otherwise specified.
- Remain flat in bed for 20 minutes following intercourse.
- As with all fertility testing, the basal body temperature chart must accompany you to the office.
- Please call the office during the first few days of your menstrual flow to make arrangements for your PK test. Phone Women's Clinic, Ltd. on Monday through Friday from 8:15am to 3:30pm at (610) 374-2214.
