An endometrial biopsy (Bx) involves taking a tiny sample of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) for microscopic evaluation. It is like a “mini” D&C. Whereas a D&C samples the entire lining of the uterus, the endometrial biopsy takes a very small piece of tissue from a very specific and limited area within the uterine cavity. This tissue sample is then processed and examined to determine if ovulation has occurred, and more importantly, the quality of that ovulation. The ovary must produce a specific amount of estrogen and progesterone hormones on a daily basis over the second half of the cycle n order to prepare the endometrium for a fertilized egg. The endometrial biopsy gives assurance that this has been accomplished. The biopsy is also helpful in determining whether or not inflammation is present in the lining of the uterus, which may interfere with the occurrence of pregnancy.
Instructions
- The endometrial biopsy is done just prior to the expected menstrual period. In order to schedule the study, please call the office during the first few days of your menstrual flow.
- You will be instructed to collect urine samples for detection of an LH surge, which triggers ovulation. The date of the biopsy is primarily determined by this test.
- You will be required to have a pregnancy test done the day prior to the day of the biopsy. If you are scheduled for the biopsy on a Monday, please bring to the office your first morning urine specimen for a pregnancy test. This will be performed before the biopsy is done. It will detect the majority of early pregnancies but nevertheless is not 100% accurate.
- There are no special preparations for the biopsy. It is an office procedure and takes no longer than a pelvic examination.
- You will experience slight cramping during and perhaps for a brief time after the procedure, and light spotting for a day or so. There is no need to curtail your activities after the biopsy. Since the biopsy is done just prior to your menstrual flow, the two may coincide; therefore, please try to distinguish between the two bleeding episodes.
- Intercourse should be delayed until there is no evidence of spotting.
- As with all infertility testing, please bring your basal temperature chart with you to the office.
- Please inform the office of the first day of your menstrual period following the endometrial biopsy. Also contact the office if you have failed to have a menstrual period within 5 days of the endometrial biopsy. Phone Women’s Clinic, Ltd. On Monday through Friday from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at (610) 374-2214.
- It will take 2-3 weeks for the biopsy to be read and evaluated. Therefore, continue any current ovulation stimulation and other medications that you have been taking. You will be notified by the office of your test results or an appointment will be made to review it.
